You should never have to just take a dog trainers word for it that they can train your dog. Every trainer should have a catalog of results showing what they can do. It’s 2025 and everyone has a camera so there is no excuse not to have film showcasing your skill

The recall is the most important command! You can’t fake a good off leash recall. Every trainer should have a large catalog of recall videos of multiple breeds of dogs having a solid recall. A recall is more than just the dog coming to you, but how fast the dog responds and being able to redirect the drive back to you. Step 1 for me is always: Install a solid Recall!

I believe you should teach your dog as many things as possible. A lot of trainers only focus on stopping unwanted behaviors but do not teach the dog to do anything. I think the more you can train your dog to do, the less they will do the unwanted behavior. The deliver to hand is an easy service basic task to teach a dog that can come back to benefit you in lots of ways. It gives the dog something to focus on, it’s a skill you can take with you to new places bringing a familiar behavior to new environments and it extracts a perfect heel after the deliver.
